While summer has barely begun, the Art community is looking forward to launch upcoming seasons.
Ballet BC has announced its 2022/2023 season will welcome five world premieres within its three programs for the season — OVERTURE/S, HORIZON/S, and WAVE/S. The new works include an international co-production with Finland’s Tero Saarinen Company and a one-of-a-kind large scale collaboration with Vancouver’s Arts Umbrella. Choreographers include Medhi Walerski, Sharon Eyal & Gai Behar, Imre & Marne van Opstal, Ji?í Pokorný, Shay Kuebler, Adi Salant, Roy Assaf, and Johan Inger. As well, the 2022/2023 season welcomes the return of Royal Winnipeg Ballet’s Nutcracker after a three-year hiatus.
“Ballet BC’s 2022/23 season brings ideas of possibility and expansion back within reach. It feels in some ways as if a blank canvas is in front of us, presenting a horizon of opportunity. I invite you to discover a wide-ranging collection of work from an imaginative group of choreographers who are taking dance to new heights.” says Medhi Walerski, Artistic Director
Opening the season November 3-5, 2022, OVERTURE/S features an intimate work by Ballet BC Artistic Director Medhi Walerski – Silent Tides. An anticipated world premiere from a highly sought-after Dutch creative pair of Imre and Marne van Opstal co-produced by Finland’s Tero Saarinen Company, and the return of one of the most popular works in Ballet BC’s repertoire, Bedroom Folk from Israeli choreographers Sharon Eyal and Gai Behar.
The season continues March 16-18, 2023 with HORIZON/S, an evening featuring a new commission from Vancouver-based Shay Kuebler, a world premiere from Czech choreographer Jiri Pokorny, and the return of an enchanting creation by Adi Salant—former Co-Artistic Director of the Batsheva Dance Company—back to share the powerfully elegant WHICH/ONE.
In WAVE/S, two world premieres from two of today’s top visionaries in contemporary dance bring the 2022/23 season to a close, May 11-13. Acclaimed choreographer Roy Assaf shares his debut creation for the Ballet BC stage, and a creator with a strong relationship to the company, Sweden’s Johan Inger, will develop a large ensemble piece in collaboration with Vancouver’s Arts Umbrella.
In a most welcome treat for everyone, Ballet BC welcome Canada’s Royal Winnipeg Ballet with their iconic, distinctly Canadian retelling of Nutcracker. A heart-warming classic for the entire family to enjoy.
