Andrew Allen – The Media Club -Dec 2, 2011
BC singer-songwriter Andrew Allen’s warm and enthusiastic personality really shone through as put in his best effort for an audience of family and friends at The Media Club in downtown Vancouver. What would normally have been a fun and easy concert became a challenge as Andrew developed a sore, raspy voice on the day of the show. Coming to the stage sounding hoarse but full of excitement to perform, he stated that he didn’t want to cancel this show. I’m sure it being packed with relatives helped give him that extra boost of energy to get through it. His voice impediment prevented him from hitting a his notes so rather than crack he altered the tune in some songs but for the most part he relied on the audience to ‘fill in the blanks’, they eagerly took up the challenge and sang along. This actually added to the usual great energy of an Andrew Allen show, bringing the audience into the show even more. Even at half-voice he still sounded great and his light and lively pop songs are welcoming and familiar even if it’s the first time you’re hearing it. A mid-set medley of former tour-mate Bruno Mars’ songs was a unexpected and well executed bonus to an already enjoyable show. Also being able to hear a rare live duet with opening act Carly Rae Jepsen was a definite treat to cap off the evening. As with many of his shows, Andrew spent a length of time after the set meeting and greeting the fans, truly a genuinely nice guy.
