Bon Iver – Deer Lake Park – 25May2012
Kicking off the Burnaby Summer Concert Series, Grammy winners Bon Iver brought a full house, or field, to the beautiful Deer Lake Park. Always a spectacular setting for a concert, Deer Lake field was still a bit soggy in patches but that didn’t deter the thousands from having a great time at the first outdoor show of the season. Many had arrived early to lay their blankets and gather their friends for an enjoyable early summer evening.
The show appeared to start a bit late, lead singer Justin Vernon alluding to the fact that someone stayed downtown at Edgewater Casino a bit too long. The eight piece band fill the stage not only in numbers but also in sound, as they performed with multiple instruments including horns and string sections.
The audience, seemingly imbued with some ‘herbal enhancements’ if the amount of smoke in the air was any indication, was having a great time, swaying to the simple melodies of Bon Iver. Performing 90 minutes of their hits including a great rendition of Skinny Love, which had everyone singing along. The singing and good times continued into the evening, a perfect start to summer.
The next Burnaby Summer Concert Series event at Deer Lake Park is Foster The People on June 25th, followed by Florence & The Machine on July 20th.
