This weekend the Vancouver Maritime Museum opened their newest exhibit; Komagata Maru: Challenging Injustice.
Telling the story of the Komagata Maru, a chartered ship bringing its South Asian passengers to their new home in Canada only to be met with hostility and discrimination. 100 years ago, Canada was a much different place than the rich multicultural mosaic we have become renowned for now.
Komagata Maru lets visitors witness the story of the racism and cultural intolerance that greeted the ship as it entered Vancouver waters. Maritime records, survivor stories and interviews with relatives of the passengers as well as historic artifacts line the walls of the exhibit to tell the story of the tragic incident.
Komagata Maru: Challenging Injustice runs at the Vancouver Maritime Museum runs until June 8, 2014, to coincide with the voyage’s centennial, just one of the great exhibits to see on your visit to the museum.
The Vancouver Martime Museum is located at 1905 Ogden Avenue.
