The Vancouver Symphony Orchestra, is taking the music outside this summer. A pair of a spectacular evenings of music and magic, first Symphony at Sunset takes place at Sunset Beach Park on Saturday, July 8th. The following week, Saturday July 15th, the 30th Symphony in the Park returns to the shores of Deer Lake Park in Burnaby for another free outdoor concert.
Whether you are an avid symphony-goer or a first-timer, you will find something to delight and inspire your senses.
Symphony at Sunset (right) treats audiences to a diverse and delightful program, led by Music Director, Maestro Otto Tausk, filled with classical and popular music, from the William Tell Overture and Max Richter’s Four Seasons Recomposed, to the beloved movie scores of Ben Hur, Star Wars and Jurassic Park.
Opening at 2pm, with first-come, first-serve seating, the Sunset Beach event grounds are conveniently accessible by bike, transit, water taxi or on foot from the downtown core, to allow audiences to claim a spot and enjoy the VSO School of Music PlayZone, where kids can explore and create music. The prelude concert, supported by Stingray Music, featuring the VSO School of Music Sinfonietta will start at 6:30 pm, followed by the main performance at 8 pm. Don’t forget to bring your picnic basket, blanket, and chairs to make yourself comfortable.
Symphony in the Park, (left) a 30-year tradition brings audiences from Burnaby and all around the region together for a beautiful evening of music, led by Assistant Conductor David Bui. In addition to classics from Rossini, Bizet, and Elgar, be transported to a world of adventure; whether it’s the suave British spy (Monty Norman’s James Bond Theme), a galaxy far, far away (Suite for Orchestra: III. Imperial March by John Williams), the magical halls of Hogwarts (John William’s Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone I. Hedwig’s Theme) or the swinging sixties (George S Clinton’s Shagadelic Suite: The Music of Austin Powers).
Arrive at Deer Lake Park early for free family activities and food trucks, bring a blanket or chair and a picnic and settle in for a wonderful evening with the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra. The venue opens at 2pm for the Musical Play Zone. A prelude concert featuring Azalea Chinese Music Ensemble takes place at 6pm ahead of the main VSO performance at7:30pm.
